This year’s competition drew 234 entries – 209 from North American members of the Tag & Label Manufacturers Institute, and 25 from international members. First place awards were presented for

26 North American labels and tags, and for 11 international labels. Seventeen second place awards were presented, all but one to North American converters.

First Place – Multi-Process, Line & Screen/Tone, Non-Prime

Center Line, MI, USA

Description/Challenges: The customer required special red numbering and hot stamp foil to increase security for their visitor badge. The challenges were maintaining the registration with multiple processes, while printing 168 line screens on uncoated paper, using photopolymer plates. Process utilized two print stations, UV ink jet, and hot stamp. Flexography and hot stamp foil. API Foils, Environmental Inks & Coatings, EFI Jetrion red ink, Kodak plates, Mark Andy press, RotoMetrics tooling.

For nine years, the Strong brothers, Mark and Tim, made tools in their machine shop to maintain the giant presses that stamped steel sheets into fenders and hoods at a nearby General Motors factory in Lansing, Mich

Aircraft parts were a sideline, but when auto work dried up last November, the brothers managed to get more orders from that side of the business to keep them afloat. They have been shaping wing spars for the A10 Thunderbolt, used to provide ground support in combat. Read Full Article

A year ago on this page we were looking at entrenchment. Oil prices were stratospheric, food prices were escalating, credit markets were tottering, and the seams of the mortgage business were tearing apart. By October, the world was acknowledging that we had swooped into the deepest economic canyon since the 1930s. Giants in several industries began to crumble.
